It depends on the type of student loan. There are some that are not dependent on your credit with the exception of things like owing to the government. These are usually need based and may not cover all of your costs. There are other student loans that are very dependent on your credit. My recommendation would be to check with your student financial aid office and have them do a full work up and see what you qualify for.

For sure apply with FAFSA and they’ll approve you for 1 years worth of tuition. If you send them a request in writing they’ll even let you get more. Also they’ll automatically check if your eligible for grants like the pell grant.
